Six of the best for Towners

A burning desire to make a statement on the South West Premier League inspired the Dunsborough Towners to a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Collie in Collie on Sunday.

That success added to the earlier Reserves 2-1 win over Collie that in turn followed the women’s strong showing in their 1-1 encounter.

In all three matches Dunsborough dominated the opposition that should have seen bigger margins in victory.

It was strong team work with explosive moments that guided the Towners in their demolition of Collie and the winning margin should have reached double figures such was the stranglehold they had on the game.

From the first whistle it was clear that Dunsborough, back close to full strength were determined to put behind them the memory of their horror start against Bunbury in the opening round when they lost 6-1.

By half time they were well on the way to doing just that established a commanding 4-0 lead.
With goals from Adam Shaw (18th min), a thunderous 20 metre drive from the powerful Neil Muckles (25th) a penalty by Chris Tew (33rd) and a long range shot from Joe Pechey (40th) that crept through the hands of Collie goalkeeper Rhet Sutherland, Dunsborough looked headed for a cricket score.

They were on target to repeat the first-half when a Muckles hard driving angled cross in the 50th minute ended with Stuart Gidley ghosting round the back to score from close range.

For some reason The Towners conspired to prevent a complete whitewash with poor finishing from then on, that twice saw Dunsborough’s attack waste a one- on-one situation with the goalkeeper and let slip the chance of a major impact statement.

On at least three occasions superb high crosses from Sebastian Kovacs and Muckles eluded the Collie defence to find Towners perfectly placed on the far post to head or tap home into an empty net only to guide the ball outside the post.

Muckles, himself dominant in midfield, was twice centimetres wide with powerful shots with Sutherland beaten while he rattled the post in the 58th minute.

Even when Tew was sent off for a second yellow card offence, reducing the Towners to ten men, Dunsborough never looked under threat with young goalkeeper Cohen Sadlier having little to do for most of the match.

While Collie had a few moments Dunsborough’s defence stood firm with Bootleg Brewery “man of the match” Brent Hillyard tireless in his position at left-back.

One of the positives from the game was the performances of youngsters Sebastian Kovacs and Josh McBride who have stamped themselves as quality first team players.
