Women Struggle Against The ElementsSunday, 22 July 2007 15:51 The Dunsborough Towners Women’s football team runs the risk of losing out on the second division championship if last Sunday’s abandoned match against Capel is not replayed. Currently they are on 25 points, one behind Bussleton and five from the leaders Hay Park. The expected victory over Capel last week would have left Dunsborough within striking distance of Hay Park with the two to meet once more this season. The Towners didn’t do themselves any favours when they were shock 2-1 losers to Margaret River two weeks ago in a match that they dominated but failing to convert the chances that came their way. Again on Sunday, in the first-half, they enjoyed most of the possession, threatening to overrun Capel, even missing a penalty with Emma Olsen blazing the spot kick over the bar. In all Dunsborough forced seven corners to no avail with the game remaining scoreless at the half-time whistle. Such was Dunsborough’s domination that goalkeeper Ollie Williams was called on only once to handle the ball when a Capel shot went wide leading to a goal kick. The half was refereed by local Gary Meyers with an official referee turning up for the two men’s matches following the women’s game. He agreed to take the whistle for the second-half but on inspection of the pitch ordered the women’s game abandoned and refused to allow the men’s fourth division and second division matches to take place. There are a few opportunities for replays this season with the second division having byes because of the loss of Collie and Dalyellup from the competition. “We may have to play on a Saturday to accommodate the replays, but it must be at home because of the need to supplement our income from the canteen takings,” said club president Tony Plumb. Australind, in particular will want a replay because they are favoured to win the second division championship. They will hold a one point lead over Bunbury United should they record a win over Dunsborough, while Dunsborough could sneak into the top four if they garner the three points from the encounter. The men’s fourth division side would take over second spot on the ladder should they beat Capel as expected. |
