Dunsborough Overcome BlackwoodSaturday, 16 June 2007 20:00 The Men’s fourth division team and the Women’s second division side kept the Dunsborough Towners flag flying high over the weekend with victories in both their encounters against Blackwood in the South West Footbball competition. The men recorded a solid 3-0 win in their encounter and the Women’s side continued on their winning way with a 5-1 victory maintaining their position at the top of the league. The Towners first team has been forced into a two week rest because of successive byes following the withdrawl of Collie from the second division. They were drawn against Collie in the league on Sunday and they were due to meet Collie in the first round of the second division cup next week. Dunsborough, true to the spirit of the competition, elected not to use any of their second division players in the fourth division game.
For much of the season The Towners have been forced to face Premier League players when competing in second division because of a permanent bye in the Premier League. Instead they stuck to their normal fourth division lineup and the rewards were all the more satisfying. It was a tough encounter as is always the case against Blackwood and is a foretaste of things to come when they face the same side in the first round of the fourth division knockout cup in Blackwood next Sunday. In a goalless first-half neither side could find a breakthrough in a physical contact match that provided little respite. With a few significant position changes in the second-half coach Steve Palmer produced a more positive outlook from The Towners. The first goal came from a penalty neatly put away by Mick Finney. Then Richard Olsen scored with a superb long distance drive midway through the half before the third came from a long shot by Tony Plumb that appeared to come off a Blackwood defender before skimming the head of Brian Donaldson to find the net. The Fourth division side, after a hesitant start, has made steady progress up the league ladder. The women’s side continues to be the star attraction for The Towners and their defeat of Blackwood came after another torrid encounter with neither side giving any quarter. Again it was the reliable scoring talents of Brooke Johannessen and Emma Olsen that proved pivotal with Kate Tarrant adding to the scoreline. However, five goals in a game tells the story and a repeat will be necessary when they again face Blackwood in Blackwood for the first round of the second division knockour cup. |
