The Dunsborough Towners gained three valuable premiership points when they battled out a 1-0 win to complete a clean sweep of all three matches over Margaret River at Gloucester Park on Sunday.

The Towners couldn’t have asked for a better start in the third minute when a long throw by Jake Thompson created havoc in the River defence to find Sebastian Kovacs rushing in on the far post to ram home from close range.

A second goal went begging in the 17th minute when a perfect cross from Kovacs found an unmarked Richard Olsen with the goal at his mercy only for his header to sail over the bar.

Striker Adam Shaw went close on two occasions with stand-in goalkeeper Stuart McKay making crucial saves.

River had two excellent chances in the first-half with Simon Corke rattling the bar from 30 metres in the 33rd minute and a mad moment from a corner in the 44th min when the Towners somehow cleared three shots off the line in a crowded goalmouth.

A revitalised Dunsborough Towners reserve side returned to the winner’s list with a comfortable 4-0 win over Reserve league cellar dwellers Margaret River at Gloucester Park on Sunday.

But for the first 20 minutes it was Margaret River’s young brigade that looked the more composed and created major problems to Dunsborough’s defence without actually presenting a significant threat in attack.

The first-half had little to recommend it until late in the half when a bending shot from Towners midfielder Jake Smith sped past the upright.

Then in the 39th minute Keiron McCabe found himself through with an open goal at his mercy from close range when he appeared to be dragged back forcing his shot to graze the outside of the post with calls for penalty falling on deaf ears.

At long last the young Dunsborough Towners women’s team have secured a victory in the 2009 Women’s Premier League with a gutsy 2-1 win over Margaret River at Gloucester Park on Sunday.

The Towners have been threatening to win in most of their matches this season only to lack the finishing touches to compliment the dominance that has been created in their general play.

Certainly they were outclassed by Bunbury Dynamo last week and probably will struggle against the likes of Hay Park and Busselton who possess strong squads.

However, they are good enough to compete successfully with the rest of the competition.

In fact their were two Towner comebacks in the match, the second the more incredible because it was accomplished with only ten men after star striker Graeme Copeman was red carded for retaliation early in the second half.

The Towners were looking at a whitewash for the club after the women’s team had been beaten 6-0 by Dynamo followed by a 6-2 hammering of the men’s reserve side.

For Dunsborough the Premier league game ran the gamut of emotions from despair to hope, to elation and finally disappointment.

The week before they had registered a meritorious 2-1 win over the same side in the first round of the South West Times knockout cup, and while the Towners struggled late on they demonstration resolution in defence.

This time there was little resistance and Dynamo outplayed Dunsborough in every facet of the game.

The Towners virtually gifted five of the goals to the opposition with slack marking, poor options on the ball and a defence that played far too square allowing Dynamo the luxury of sliding round the back for free shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Paul Andrews did well on many occasions but too often was left exposed with little hope of preventing the avalanche.

The week before they had succumbed 9-1 to the same side in the South West Times knockout cup at the same venue.

It was the improvement that was a positive for the home side that counts at this stage as the new line-up settles down.

Since the start of the season it is clear that Dunsborough has a well balanced combination with Belinda Perna outstanding as the director of the defence, Joey Schleuter and Emma Olsen solid in midfield while Chelcie Winchcombe, Amelia Lotze, Mia Holtz and Emily Mathews, to name just a few, consistently perform well.

In truth, Dynamo was the better composed combination for much of the match.

But oddly it was the Towners that had the better clear cut chances to win the game and advance to the next round of the competition.

At the point where Dynamo held a 3-1 lead Dunsborough created three chances that really should have been converted with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Richard Olsen, Adam Shaw and Graeme Copeman found themselves unexpectedly in the clear following a favourable bounce of the ball.

On each occasion, however, they rushed the opportunity either directing the shots at the goalkeeper or slicing it well wide of the goal.

They had already fought out an energy sapping 2-2 draw with Eaton in a Premier League reserve match the day before.

There were few reserves to call on unless it was from players selected to appear in the first team in the following match.

There was little in the contest in the first-half until the 35th minute when young Aiden Greig took the responsibility to strike a 20 metre free kick that sailed over the Eaton defensive wall and curved past a bemused Eaton goalkeeper.

Like their men’s Premier and Premer Reserve teams they had to front up two days in succession to play in the League and the Cup matches against a club that had the luxury of an eight day rest.

All three Dunsborough teams had difficult matches that ended in three draws on the Sunday.

There is no doubt that exhaustion played a major factor in all three Dunsborough matches on the Monday.

Unfortunately they are having trouble finding the net in attack to turn dominance into victory.

In their first three league matches Dunsborough certainly looked the winning side against Bunbury United, Collie and Harvey onlu to have to settle for two draws and a loss.

Towners draw with Eaton http://juniors.dunsboroughfc.com/match-reports/premier-league-mens/423-towners-draw-with-eaton http://juniors.dunsboroughfc.com/match-reports/premier-league-mens/423-towners-draw-with-eaton
The Towners were forced to appear on Monday having already played a tough 1-1 draw with Eaton at the same venue on Sunday.

To add to the imbalance of the fixturing because of the odd number of clubs in the South West Premier League Dynamo had the luxury of a bye on Sunday leaving them fresh for the cup encounter with Dunsborough.

This was the case for all three Towners teams that played Dynamo on Monday.

However, The Towners can only blame themselves and the Eaton cross bar for not having secured all three points in the league match on Sunday

From the start it was all Dunsborough with Neil Muckles hitting the cross bar first in the tenth minute.

It was Muckles again a little later who provided the Townes with what appeared the perfect start when he slipped through the perfect defence splitting pass that allowed the little whippet, Graeme Copeman, to fins space and give the home town side the lead.

Joy, however, was short lived when Eaton hit back five minutes later to level the scores and send a shiver of concern through the Dunsborough ranks.

Eaton, just back in the Premier League this season, looked a more than useful side with a number of former premier league players having signed on from other clubs in  the off-season.

But it was a frustrating second half that dogged the Towners as they went in search of victory and full points.

On another day they might have strolled to a comfortable win only on this occasion for the cross bar on five occasion and the post on another to deny the expected victory.

As one wit said after the game Dunsborough’s players looked like drunks having hit the bar so often.]]>

But just as quickly Eaton brought the Towners crashing back to earth with two goals of their own in a tough 2-2 draw.

At this early stage the oemsn were there for a high scoring encounter with both sidssz throwing caution to the wind an attacking at every opportunity.

A burning desire to make a statement on the South West Premier League inspired the Dunsborough Towners to a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Collie in Collie on Sunday.

That success added to the earlier Reserves 2-1 win over Collie that in turn followed the women’s strong showing in their 1-1 encounter.

In all three matches Dunsborough dominated the opposition that should have seen bigger margins in victory.

It was strong team work with explosive moments that guided the Towners in their demolition of Collie and the winning margin should have reached double figures such was the stranglehold they had on the game.

From the first whistle it was clear that Dunsborough, back close to full strength were determined to put behind them the memory of their horror start against Bunbury in the opening round when they lost 6-1.

By half time they were well on the way to doing just that established a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Dunsborough Towners regained their composure with a solid 2-1 win over Collie in the second round of the South West Association’s Premier League Reserves competition in Collie on Sunday.

The return of many players to the club after as many 11 were absent from the first round for various reasons provided the coaches with a selection smorgasbord.

With the Premier League first team close to full strength the reserves benefited with a vast improvement in playing strength.

The presence of the Thompson brother Clint and Jake was a big plus and it was a telling factor in the 11th minute when Clint was the provider with a long cross that found Jake close in to turn home for the early lead.

For much of the first-half it was the dominance of the Towners that constantly threatened to provide them with  a comfortable half-time lead.

Youngster Kaden Heathcoate was menacing with his speed down the right wing, Richard Olsen played carefully as he tested out his knee but was always threatening while Thompson always looked capable of a second goal.

A lack of a finishing touch cost the Dunsborough Towners women’s Premier League side valuable points once again when they drew 1-1 with Collie in Collie on Sunday.

For the second match in a row the Towneres dominated for long periods playing a well balanced style of football until the moment when seeking goals.

They deserved the three points against Bunbury in the opening round if possession means anything and it was a similar patter against Collie.

Defensively they were well lead by Belinda Perna and it was significant that she was up field adding to the pressure when the Towners were caught on the counter attack.

In the 57th minute Collie broke away swept right allowing them to score on acute angle just inside the near post.

In reality it was against the run of play.
