Dunsborough power up for Collie

The Dunsborough Towners season starts this Sunday when they clash with Collie in the second round of the South West Premier League football season in Collie.

In a disastrous opening round two weeks ago Dunsborough’s three senior teams, Premier League, Reserves and Women, lost to Bunbury United 6-1, 3-0 and 1-0.

The club has decided to ignore that day and concentrate on the rest of the season.

“We had so many players missing for various reasons that we couldn’t field two full men’s teams and were forced to play most of the second-half of the Premier League encounter with ten men,” said club president Tony Plumb.

“This week they will all be back on deck and on the showing at pre-season training we should have a competitive side to provide any opposition with food for thought”.

The Easter break was fortuitous for a number of players who picked up knocks in the game against Bunbury. However, there are still question marks hanging over one or two players for this week’s game.

Dunsborough Towners newcomer Ben Powle was the surprise winner of the Dunsborough pre-season penalty shootout competition before a big festive crowd of locals and tourists at the Bootleg Brewery last Saturday.

The shootout featured two of WA’s great goalkeepers in former Socceroo Tony Franken and Tommy Maras who played many times for WA and Perth Glory.

Franken, who rushed back from Japan where he was the goalkeeper coach for the Socceroos in their World Cup campaign, was full of praise for the competition and the Dunsborough area.

“I’ve been to many places in the World and there are not many better than down here in this region of the South West,” said Franken

Penalties and stars at bootleg

Australian international goalkeepers Tony Franken and Tommy Maras will be the stars at the Dunsborough Towners annual penalty shootout competition kicking off at midday at the Bootleg Brewery on Saturday February 21.

Both Franken and Maras readily jumped at the chance to be involved in the competition following up on their first appearance in the event two years ago that attracted a big crowd at Bootleg.

On that occasion it was Busselton’s deadly striker Robbie Seia that won in the final shootout against Dunsborough’s Martyn Mulley.

The Towners are lucky to have secured the services of Franken who is the current Socceroos goalkeeping coach and who has been travelling with the Australian squad to Japan where the national team was involved in the latest Asian World Cup qualifying match that will help determine the make-up of Asia’s contestants in the 2010 World Cup.

Franken appeared 28 times in Australian colours at senior level (1984-92) while he was a member of the country’s under 20 and Under 23 squads in 1983 and 84 respectively. In addition he played in the National League for various club, including WA’s Glory from 1984 to 2000 and was a member of the Glory side that won the title in 2000.

Maras played 21 times for WA has five Premier League medallions with Perth Italia to his name and enjoyed international status playing with clubs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. He was the first choice goalkeeper for Perth Glory when they entered the National League in 1996.

Both will provide a golden opportunity for local coaches and juniors to gain valuable knowledge in the art of goalkeeping when they hold a coaching clinic on the Dunsborough Fields at 9am on the Saturday morning of the competition.

Juniors reveal bright future

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Junior Football season is three weeks old and one thing is clear - the area is teeming with talent that augurs well for the game in the South West.

This year the Dunsborough Towners have tapped into the well of talent in the town selecting three juniors for the Premier Reserve side in Sam Holt (13), Cohen Sadlier (13) and Aiden Greig (15). The women’s team, in the Premier league for the first time this year, have picked up an outstanding performer in 14 year-old Chelsie Winchcombe

Premier League For Duns FC

Despite finishing fourth in their second division competition last year the Association has forced Dunsborough into the Premier League that will comprise only six teams this year.

The league will be made up of Australind, Hay Park, Bunbury United, Bunbury Dynamo, Busselton and Dunsborough with each club playing each other four times on a home and away basis. Each club apart from Dunsborough will field three teams filling spots in the Premier League, the Reserves and the Thirds with Eaton taking Dunsborough’s place in the thirds.

2007 Season Wrap

The 2007 season will go down as a significant watershed in the history of the Dunsborough Football club. The club is only three years old having enjoyed it’s first competitive season in 2005 with it’s one and only senior men’s team.

In the second year it won the fourth division league title and added the fourth division knockout cup to the trophy cabinet. The third year attracted many more players to the club, enough for Dunsborough to field two men’s teams in different divisions of the South West competition.

New Players At Training

A few new faces have been seen down at the oval on Wednesday nights in pre-pre-season training. From the standard of their commitment and skills, it looks like we can expect some silver in the trophy cabenit courtesy of the girls.

Senior players pre-season training has started at the oval on Wednesday nights.

While training sessions are presently light three touch games, players are reminded they should be well into their fitness and cardio training.

New players are more than welcome.

Bootleg Brewery have once again sponsored the now annual Penalty Shot competition. Once again Austalian international goal keeper, Toni Franken will keep goals and try to save as many as possible.

Last years even drew a huge crowd of onlookers as the Dunsborough men and women tested their skills against one of Australia's best ever keepers.

Playing Field Disgrace

The Dunsborough Towners football season appears in jeopardy if the rains continue to soak the area. Last Sunday Dunsborough’s three matches at the Recreation Oval were abandoned by the referee because the ground was waterlogged and he considered the pitch unsafe. He had good cause for concern following leg injuries that forced four players from the field in the first-half of the Women’s second division clash between The Towners and Capel.

The Dunsborough Towners Football club unveiled their initial pre-season penalty competition at the Bootleg Brewery last Sunday with a full house of patrons looking on. The Dunsborough soccer penalty shootout at the Bootleg Brewery came down to a sudden death battle between Dunsborough and Busseleton and it was Busselton who prevailed. The club plans to make the competition an annual event at the same venue for all clubs in the South West Football Association.

The ambitions of the Dunsborough Towner’s Football Club to win the second division title in the South West Soccer Association competition will be severely tested in the opening rounds of the competition. They will face two of the power clubs in the South West in Bunbury and Busselton in the first two rounds in April.

There’s two ways you can look at the draw,” said Dunsborough coach Steve Palmer. “It’s good to meet these two clubs early on while everyone is coming to grips with the new season and get them out of the way or we find out quickly what we’ve got and make the necessary adjustments before the season really gets going,” said Palmer.

Palmer, who has taken over coaching the first team from club president Tony Plumb, considers anything less than the second division premiership would be well short of the potential of the players under his command.

The Dunsborough Town soccer club will put the theory of a certain goal to the test with a penalty competition at the Bootleg Brewery on a date yet to be decided late in March.

Turmoil surrounded the opening of the 2008 South West Football Association season when a number of fixtures had to be altered late last week following the withdrawal of Hay Park from the Premier league.

Hay Park, one of the leading clubs in the South West for the past few seasons, found themselves without enough players to field proper teams in the competition and withdrew on Thursday. The Association was forced into a hurried re-assessment of the makeup of the leagues dropping Hay Park to the fourth division and elevating Dalyellup to the Premier league.
